No matter how hard we try it’s difficult to put ourselves in the position of someone else, yet understanding is necessary if we are to truly help someone in need, not least of all the bereaved. If we have been bereaved ourselves, or had another major loss, then that experience will be useful. We can also ask the individual concerned what they would like us to do. However, Christians equipping themselves to support the bereaved is really important as every situation is different and there is a lot of misunderstanding around. There are various ways of gaining good understanding but undertaking basic training can be particularly useful.
